Be in business for yourself but not by yourself
Pros and Cons of buying a cleaning Franchise
There is a ready market for cleaning services in your area. The business has had tremendous growth in the recent past. Everywhere you look businesses and institutions are outsourcing their cleaning services. This also happens to be your field of operation. You know you have entrepreneurial skills that you can put into practice. You would like to own a business and run it with your cleaning skills in mind. The only thing stopping you is the fact that you don’t want to hang out your shingle as a totally unknown person. You want to remove the uncertainty of striking out completely on your own but at the same time, y ou’d like to own the business.
The option that looks quite promising to you is the franchise business. So you want to know more about franchise buying before you delve into it? Here are some advantages and disadvantages to help you make an educated decision. The decision whether to buy the cleaning franchise is absolutely, wholly yours. Ours is to advice you and educate you in order to make an informed judgment for yourself. Your choice ordinarily depends on your unique set of circumstances and willingness to be in the business under a franchise and the staying power.
A franchise is a string of businesses in any given business field. Your chosen field is cleaning. The startup cost can sometimes be prohibitive. The good thing about franchises is that they are tried and tested. Someone took time to establish what works and can therefore guide you through the treacherous terrain of a start up and help you get your business up and running. He can therefore provide you with startup information, training, and name recognition. The franchise’s foolproof method of success ensures that you escape the pitfalls associated with beginning business as a fresh entrant. The major advantage here also is that the name recognition in your chosen field attracts customers providing you with a client base faster than an unknown entrant.
Your employees’ training needs are catered for because a franchise has an established guide on how to do this. Some franchises even train the employees for you. This is a boon to your business as you hit the ground running with professional employees on your belt. The disadvantage is that you might have a few innovative ideas on how you want to render your services. This might not be the way the franchise does it. This is not allowed unless you are an independent business owner. Franchises are a bit rigid when it comes to presenting uniformity of service and products.
A cleaning franchise would have established supplies and equipment stores they procure from. This removes the guesswork of what to get from where. Their agreement with the franchise label as business partners can afford you good discounts that will come in handy when starting out. The downside to this is that you are not allowed to take advantage of any other industry offers that competitors might have. You are tied to the authorized equipment and supplies store that the franchise uses.
At the outset, there is a franchise agreement that needs to be signed. Though the agreements differ, there are certain costs you need to pay for the label. This might not be a welcome thought to you but it is like buying or paying for the label usage.&nb sp; In addition, for any national campaigns done, you also contribute to the advertisement fund to facilitate these campaigns. The specificity of your store is lost in the whole ad campaigns as they are advertised as a block. You can’t uproot your business and take it to any locality you might desire. This is because franchises have specific areas they operate in and might even tie you to a particular building where you will operate out of. This is both positive and negative. If you wanted the freedom of base, then you don’t have it. The franchise however does the locating of an operation site for you that will help you maximize on client acquisition since there is ready market as their research will have shown.
A cleaning franchise, like any other franchise, will provide you with the marketing scope. There are a given number of advertisements you can do in your area and to what extent. You are not free to put up your address in the directory as you choose. Neither can you print your own unique cards. The franchise dictates the way you market your janitorial business and provide templates on any advertising or printing works to be undertaken. Your ideas are then shelved to when you will be an independent business owner.
The products and services that you offer are meant to be uniform to the franchise’s services and products. The ra tes to go along with these are also pre-set. You are not allowed to offer any services outside their guidelines. The business hours set out in the agreement that you will sign are supposed to be adhered to. Even if you get a client with unique time schedules, you will not be allowed to clean for them because they do not fit into the corporate provisions of the franchise. Stick to the schedule provided and adhere to the guidelines from the parent company.
Remember that the cleaning franchise business is a set of rules and procedures that must be followed to the letter in order to retain their label. Independent thought is removed from these set ups. Therefore, if you are getting into business to insert your own unique ideas and methods into cleaning, the franchise business might not be suitable for you.
Before delving further into purchasing this cleaning franchise, it is important to talk to others who are already in the business. Listen to their complaints and praises. Is it working out for them? Will it work out for you with your individuality under the same circumstances? If so, then go right ahead and purchase it. If not, think again and do further research on your intended business venture.
